Natural Wood Character & Responsible Timber Use
Solid wood carries the record of how a tree grew. Grain movement, knots, colour changes and occasional knot pockets are natural characteristics, not the repetition of a manufactured surface.
We select and place timber thoughtfully, explain what customers can expect, and take extra time to make useful furniture from more of every suitable board.
Working with real wood
Variation is part of the material
The appearance of solid wood changes with species, board, cut, moisture, sanding and finish. Pine may show pronounced knots and lively grain; hardwoods have their own movement, mineral marks and colour variation. These differences are one reason handmade furniture feels individual.
We choose the presentation faces of a piece with care. On undersides, backs, interiors and other concealed or non-display surfaces, structurally suitable sections may retain stronger natural marks. Their position is considered during making and they are used only where they do not compromise the construction, safety or intended use of the furniture.
Selected for purpose
Visible faces, concealed faces and structural parts have different requirements. We consider both the character and the intended job of each section.
Explained honestly
Natural characteristics are disclosed before purchase so they are understood as part of real wood, never used to excuse damage or poor construction.

What natural character can look like

Using more of each board
Extra workshop time, less avoidable waste
Cutting solid timber for one order often leaves sound ends and smaller sections. In faster production systems, these pieces can be inefficient to sort, store and prepare. We make a deliberate effort to keep suitable workshop offcuts and assess whether they can be integrated into later furniture.
Preparing a smaller section can take more time than starting with a new full-length board, but it allows us to use more of the material already in the workshop. We do this only where the size, appearance and construction make sense.
Our standard
Character never replaces sound construction
A natural mark is accepted only after its location and purpose have been considered. Material that would weaken a joint, reduce stability, create an unsafe surface or shorten the intended life of the piece is not used in that position.
Natural character may include
Grain and colour variation, sound knots, small checks around knots and suitable knot pockets on concealed or non-display faces.
It does not excuse
Poor construction, unsafe weakness, active decay, transport damage or a product that does not match its agreed description. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.
